Alexandria Academy, Alexandria, Virginia, is a three-story schoolhouse of brick, built in 1782 to educate poor children and subsequently endowed in George Washington’s will.
Owned by the Historic Alexandria Foundation, Alexandria Academy is rented as an office. Unfortunately, the building had been much abused since it was closed down in 1827.
Oak Grove Restoration Company brought the building back to its original design with conservation of the original brick walls and the recreation of doors and windows. All aspects of the restoration were based on evidence surviving in the building.
